Capture Nature's Purest Essence

Essential oils are present in plant material at very low concentrations — typically 0.1% to 3% by weight — making mechanical pressing impractical for most botanicals. Steam distillation is the gold-standard extraction method: steam passing through the plant material vaporises the volatile aromatic compounds, which are then condensed and separated from the water condensate (hydrosol) by gravity.

Our plants are available in full stainless steel (SS 304 / SS 316) for pharma and cosmetic-grade applications, or mild-steel construction for industrial-grade output. GMP-compliant designs with clean-in-place (CIP) systems are available for export-market producers.

Steam Distillation vs Cold Press

🌫️
Steam Distillation
Most common · 200+ botanicals
Steam passes through plant material, vaporising volatile aromatic compounds
Vapour condenses — condensate separates into essential oil and hydrosol
Suitable for heat-stable botanicals: lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, cumin
Batch or continuous designs available
✓ Recommended for: 95% of botanical raw materials
🍊
Cold Press Extraction
Heat-free · Citrus & seeds
Mechanical cold pressing — no heat applied
Peel/rind is abraded or pressed to rupture oil cells
Essential for citrus oils (lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit)
Output is 100% cold-pressed — premium labelling
✓ Recommended for: Lemon, Orange, Lime, Bergamot

Engineering Highlights

🧮
Botanical-Specific Engineering Design
Every parameter — still volume, steam flow rate, condensation area, separator dimensions — is calculated specifically for your botanical and batch size.
💧
Dual-Product: Essential Oil + Hydrosol Capture
Our Florentine flask separates the essential oil layer from the condensate hydrosol — both are valuable products.
🔬
Full SS 304 / SS 316 Food & Pharma Grade
All plant-contact surfaces in food-grade SS 304 as standard — SS 316 available for pharmaceutical applications.
🌡️
Steam Flow Control & Pressure Regulation
Precise steam pressure control (0.2–1.5 bar) with optional PLC automation for batch-to-batch consistency.
🔄
Cohobation System for Maximum Oil Recovery
Returns hydrosol back through the still, recovering water-soluble aromatic components — improving yield by 15–40%.

What's Included

🏺01
Distillation Still (Clevenger Vessel)
Vertical cylindrical SS vessel with perforated false bottom. Available 100L to 10,000L capacity.

♨️02
Steam Generator / Boiler
Dedicated miniature steam boiler (LPG, biomass, or electric) for small batch plants.
0.2 – 1.5 bar operating pressure
🌀03
Shell & Tube Condenser
Counter-current cooling condenser converts vapour mixture back to liquid.
Full condensation of all vapours
🧪04
Florentine Flask (Gravity Separator)
Precision-dimensioned gravity separator divides EO from hydrosol based on density difference.
Dual product: EO + Hydrosol
♻️05
Cohobation Return System
Pump and piping circuit returns hydrosol to the still for re-distillation.
Yield improvement: 15–40%
🫙06
SS Storage & Filling Station
Dedicated SS storage vessels for essential oil and hydrosol with nitrogen blanketing option.
N₂ blanketing optional

Steam Distillation Step-by-Step

🌾
Step 01 — Material Preparation
Harvesting, Drying & Size Reduction
Raw botanical material is harvested at peak oil content, then sized to increase surface area for oil release — improving yield by 20–35%.
🏺
Step 02 — Loading the Still
Charging the Distillation Vessel
Plant material is loaded into the still through the hinged lid — packed uniformly but not too tightly. Steam at 0.2–1.0 bar permeates the plant bed.
🌫️
Step 03 — Distillation
Steam Carries Volatile Aromatic Compounds
Steam ruptures oil glands and vaporises volatile compounds. The vapour stream exits the still into the condenser.
❄️
Step 04 — Condensation
Vapour-to-Liquid Conversion
The mixed vapour enters the shell-and-tube condenser where cold water cools the vapours to liquid.
🧪
Step 05 — Separation & Collection
Gravity Separation of Essential Oil & Hydrosol
In the Florentine separator, essential oil and hydrosol separate by gravity. Both are collected as market-ready products.

Common Questions

Essential oil yield varies enormously by botanical. Approximate yields per 100 kg: Lavender: 0.5–1.5 kg; Peppermint: 0.5–1.2 kg; Eucalyptus: 1.5–3.5 kg; Rose: 0.02–0.05 kg; Cumin: 2.5–4.5 kg. We provide crop-specific yield data during consultation.

In steam distillation, steam is passed through the plant material. In hydro-distillation, plant material is directly immersed in water. Hydro-distillation is gentler for delicate flowers; steam distillation is faster for leafy, woody materials.

Yes — our batch plants are designed for multi-botanical operation. Between batches, the system is flushed and cleaned (CIP procedure takes 20–40 minutes).

Cohobation returns hydrosol to the still for re-distillation, recovering dissolved oil fractions. For rose otto, cohobation can improve yield by 30–40%.
