Solvent Extraction vs Cold Press: Which Method Maximises Oil Yield?

A technical comparison of two major oil extraction methods — efficiency, cost, and output quality breakdown.

Solvent Extraction vs Cold Press Comparison

When setting up an oil processing unit, one of the first decisions you face is which extraction method to use: solvent extraction or cold press.

Cold pressing preserves natural nutrients and aroma but yields less oil (leaving 8–12% oil in the cake). Solvent extraction recovers almost all the oil (residual below 0.5% in DOC) but requires hexane handling infrastructure.

Which One is Right for You?

If your target market is premium/organic consumers, cold press commands 2–4× higher price. If you are processing large volumes for B2B or commodity markets, solvent extraction gives the best financial return.

Many clients run both — a cold press expeller followed by a mini SEP on the cake — to maximise total oil recovery.
